I am a New Hampshire Licensed Clinical Psychologist with 25 years of experience. I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Syracuse University and completed my psychology internship at Harvard Medical School’s McLean Hospital. I have worked in hospital and outpatient settings conducting psychotherapy, psychological evaluations, consultations, psychotherapy supervision, and psychological testing. I am on staff at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center, where I have been affiliated since 1994.
MY PRACTICE AND APPROACH
I opened my office in Amherst in 1989 and have enjoyed a busy and thriving private practice. I most enjoy individual and couples/marital therapy, and I have chosen to limit my practice to these two areas.
Some of the approaches that I draw upon in my work are described below:
My training in psychology provided a strong psychodynamic foundation that helps me to appreciate the influences of the past on who we are today. For example, your upbringing may contribute to being stuck in repetitive and unproductive patterns of thinking, feeling or behaving. This is because early experiences shape attitudes about yourself and your relationships.
Relational and attachment approaches consider the quality of adult intimacy in terms of the early parent-child relationship, in particular, the ability to develop a secure and trusting attachment. Since a successful therapist-patient relationship is based on those same qualities, it in itself can contribute to change. Attachment theory provides a framework in psychotherapy for gaining insight into unhealthy patterns of relating.
Cognitive-behavioral approaches are often useful in identifying negative self-talk and beliefs and replacing them with more positive ways of thinking that promote growth and self-esteem.
Stress management techniques can be invaluable in coping with feelings of stress or anxiety and in creating a greater sense of calm and well-being. These include breathing exercises, muscle relaxation, visualization, guided imagery, and meditation. Life style changes can also reduce stress.
Hypnotherapy techniques offer yet another tool to enhance the above approaches.
In addition to conducting psychotherapy, when appropriate, I work together with psychiatrists and physicians to coordinate care, including the use of medication.
I participate with several insurance plans including Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Harvard-Pilgrim, ValueOptions, Private Healthcare Systems (PHCS), and Healthcare Value Management (HCVM). If you are not certain whether my services are covered by your health plan or if you would like to discuss the cost of service or any other aspect of my practice, please don’t hesitate to call me at (603) 672-9660 anytime and leave a confidential voice mail message.
